Raven Haired – Gambia Edition will be released at 3pm BST on Friday May the 27th. The main edition size is 150- priced at £180, with 15 hand-finished specials priced at £300….
The spec on these beauties is: 6 colour hand pulled screenprint, on BFK Rives – grey 280 gsm (4 deckled edge/embossed paper) 550 x 760 mm. The natural grain and feel of the paper with it’s muted colour and deckled edges help to reinforce the natural/rustic feel of the print’s subject matter.
The challenge in realising this print (there always seems to be a challenge!!!)- was to maintain the painterly spatter and spray-effect fine detail of the original stencil painting. Eelus was also keen to use a ‘scuff resistant’ ink, with such a large expanse of black- rightly so, you don’t want scratches and dusty scuffs. So we had a wrestle on our hands- imagine squeezing Marmite through a pair of tights (we’ve all been there!). The viscous black ink and a run of uncharacteristically hot days meant that the screen was very susceptible to clogging up. So as to not lose any detail we had to wash the screen out a ridiculous amount of times- so a couple of gallons of screen wash and a few reams of newsprint later this is the result. We’re very pleased with the outcome, we’ve maintained the same level of detail with every print, so it was worth going that extra mile!
Also if you are not familiar with the background, this image was born from Eelus’s involvement in the Wide Open Walls’ project of last year- where Eelus put together a group of artists and visited the Kunbeh village in Gambia. Here they set about painting murals around the village, creating workshops for the kids and documenting the commendable positivity inherent in the villagers who constantly struggle against poverty. £20 from every print sold will be put towards the design and build of an art classroom for the children of Kubuneh village.
