2011 space oddity

Recently we were asked to print up some illustrations by London based artist/illustrator  Tom Jennings. Being big fans of his loose and naive style and realising that there would probably never be an easier job than this, we said YES!!!!

These prints slot nicely into our ‘dirty thirty’ category, an edition of 30 prints released at the end of the month-around the 3oth and selling at a very ‘easy on the pocket’ £30.

The prints themselves are printed on Somerset Satin 310gsm paper, 400 x 300 mm with 2 natural deckled edge/2 false deckled edge.

The image and quote have been taken from the Stanley Kubrick classic 2001: A Space Oddysey, and re-interpretted and brought bang up to date ‘innit!’

The prints will be available to browse on-the-rack here until their release at the end of Novemeber, they will then be available exclusively from Tom’s BigCartel site coming soon

we are the thirsty

Another nice and easy job breezed through the studio last week, this one for designer Louise Sheeran.

The print ‘nous sommes les soiffards’ (we are the thirsty)  is a clever take on a French ’68 student revolution poster ’nous sommes les pouvoir’ (we are the power).

it is an edition of 25, A2 size screen prints on Fabriano Accademia 220gsm stock (4 guilotine edges). Until Louise Sheeran’s website is fully functional these prints are available to view and buy from the shop here at a very reasonable £30 (almost less than a bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape), and it’ll last a lot longer!  Santé!

etchy and scratchy

Another recent resident on the rack were these debut prints by punk-inspired London based artist/illustrator Richard Loveless. Now if that’s not the name of somebody destined for fame- what is?

These are from an edition of 100 prints, 1 colour on 310 gsm Somerset Satin White stock, 2 natural deckle/2 false deckle edge, size 18×24 inch, all signed and stamped with the ‘Loveless’ logo. The print is titled: ‘Nostalgia’, and demonstrates Loveless’ recognisable ‘etchy’ illustration style see more of his work here Continue reading

dead big prints!

Well- not that big, A2 to be precise. Look no further than up-the-arts, for all your dead-celebrity printing needs. Or at least it seems that way at the moment, with ghost images of Amy still appearing on screens and now this Biggie image by France based PlayMoney on the rack, the studio is looking like a MOBO’s from the other side.

These 3 colour A2 prints are printed on Fabriano Accademia white 220gsm acid free stock, 4 guillotine cut edges. Continue reading

nothing to do with West Ham

the latest offering from john doe is the long overdue ‘miss universe’

this is taken from an original painting (stencil/brushwork/spatter technique) first produced over 3 years ago, it has taken this long to materialise into an edition of prints

released as an edition of 150 hand pulled screenprints, on black Plike stock (360 x 1024mm). If you are not familiar with Plike it is the don of all papers! A really premium stock that has a luxurious smooth skin-like tactile quality. The 2 colour print uses metallic silver ink and a gloss white so the image really jumps off the paper.

each print has been individually hand finished using fine spatters of silver paint and gloss varnish. The varnish sits invisibly on the paper until it catches the light – then it twinkles like stars. Still photographs can’t really capture this effect so check the movie below. *first one to name the track in the background wins a print

As well as the main edition, there will be 25 hand finished specials with spray painted planets.

the prints are being signed and stamped over the next few days and will be released at 4pm BST on Friday 2nd September 2011. You can pick one up from here: up-the-arts Big Cartel store at a price of £65 silver edition, £95 special coloured edition – pretty reasonable (considering it’s on Plike, metallic and gloss ink, each hand finished, and we’ll throw in a free postal tube)

also don’t miss out on future releases from john doe and the up-the-arts print studio by joining the mailing list we’ll inform you in advance about release dates and up-to-date print news

kingless kingdom…

we were very pleased to be called upon once again by David Shillinglaw and Cement Gallery to create an edition of prints to accompany his “All You’ll Ever Need” show which opened on the 25th August at the East Gallery Brick Lane

the print ‘kingless kingdom’ was a one colour job on Fabriano Accedemia 220gsm paper, edition of 100, 500 x 700 mm, as ever with David’s work the key was all about keeping the very fine hair-line detail of the original drawing… Continue reading

dirty thirty off to a great start!

Apologies to anyone interested in the Hell Yeah print.

Although all elements of the artwork were re-drawn or digitally re-created using the original cover photography by Robert Freeman as reference only- and Robert Freeman credited with the inspirational and iconic original image – the Acme rendition has still been deemed by some to infringe copyright laws.

I can only apologise for the inconvenience for the subsequent withdrawal of this print and assure you that it was in no way meant to be dis-respectful in any way- just a subversive play on words and layout.

We’re trying to get something else up here for 5 instead! Sorry it’ll probably have a moon on it!

who the f**k is Alice?

“I’m late, I’m late, for a very important date!” Apologies for the late blog post- a couple of weeks after the actual launch- but it seems in keeping with the white rabbit. So here it is- the latest release from Eelus and the latest print from the up-the-arts studio.

Eelus was commissioned by those nice guys across the pond at Dark Hall Mansions, to produce their first in a series of Fairy Tale inspired works. Keep an eye on them for more collaborations with other artists in the near future.

The artist says: “Recreating a classic scene from a story so rich in imagination with so many instantly recognisable moments to choose from has been a lot of fun. The story of a little girl called Alice who followed a white rabbit into a fantasy world of madness has been inspiring artists for decades and I’m happy to add myself to that list with this piece.”

And of course we were quite happy to print this piece, even though it was quite a meaty edition of 200 5 colour prints and a very special limited edition of 15 in a different colour way.

So the all important spec.- 200 of 5 colour hand pulled screenprints on Somerset satin 4 deckled edge 3oogsm stock, and the 15 specials to the same spec. The specials have long since sold out, however you might still be in luck for the regular edition, however – don’t hang around!… at a very reasonable £100 these won’t be around for ever. Try here for stock availability and follow Dark Hall Mansion on Twitter here to keep an eye out for future releases and news.

Hairspray, facepaint, screenwash & newsprint

It’s been a while- so long in fact that I’d forgotten the log in code for WordPress. But we’re in! Just in time to document the creation and release of a new set of prints by Eelus.

Raven Haired – Gambia Edition will be released at 3pm BST on Friday May the 27th. The main edition size is 150- priced at £180, with 15 hand-finished specials priced at £300…. Continue reading

final phase of the moon

More ‘Stay Up Forever’ prints for release. There was always going to be a second wave of these, it’s taken a while to get around to it but we got here in the end. A lot of people missed out last time, so hopefully if you didn’t get hold of one before you’ll grab one this time around.

This is to be the last release of ‘Stay Up’, maybe some dribs and drabs in various forms might leak out as I use up any spares knocking around the studio, but this is the last proper launch

Amazingly the first wave have been going for upwards of £175 on E-Bay in the past few weeks, not a bad return on a print bought for £35-45 just over a month ago. Let’s see how they survive the test of time. So what’s on offer this time around…well, tried something a bit different with coloured stocks, still Colorplan 270gsm, but using some nice dark colours. The midnight (blue), claret (dark red) and amethyst (purple) are pretty special. Each hand finished with white spraypaint to make the moon ping off the paper, then a spot gloss lacquer is applied to the moon and drips only, creating a shimmer when the light catches these elements, this matt/gloss effect and the rich paper colours give them areal ‘luxurious’ feel.

Also available are some grey/poison/toxic colours, and the more subtle  white print on black stock- hand finished with lilac and purple.

The all important edition numbers on these are: 20(numbered) for each of the luxury- midnight, claret and amethyst. 25(numbered) for the lilac/purple, 5 for the grey/poison and grey/toxic and there will be some more limited offerings popping up over the next few days.

Because of the subsequent meltdown I’ll be selling these through BigCartel, it shouldn’t effect you in anyway, it’ll make it easier for calculating accurate postage and you’ll be able to keep an eye on stock levels. The prints are launched at 3pm GMT Monday, 28th March 2011. but you can browse over the weekend: store

While you are there, check out the ‘Stay Up Forever’ very limited canvases for sale, again these come in the regular black (Tranquility) and 3 ‘luxury’ colours- (midnight/claret/amethyst) each one unique.

Finally, I’m sure you share the feelings of sadness and disbelief at the events of the earthquake/tsunami that devastated areas of Japan on March 11th. I visited Japan a couple of years ago and fell in love with the place, and the people there! It’s hard watching the images unfold on the tv and not be able to do anything to help.

over the last few weeks since the first launch, I’ve had so many requests for a print with a loveheart on (well the last release was near Valentine’s Day), but Mrs Doe was the sole recipient of this one-off print. However if this is something that people want, then I’m willing to ‘do requests’- just this once. So an absolute ‘one-off’ canvas has been painted, never to be painted in this colour way again, never to have a loveheart again, gotta say this is a smasher! on sale at EBay here all 100% sales to go to the ‘Japan earthquake and tsunami appeal’ via EBay- so please dig deep, even if you put a couple of sneaky bids on in the early stages- you’ll be doing your bit!
